Transportation

Getting to campus during Commencement Week can be challenging, especially on Commencement Day. Plan your travel to and from the Morningside campus accordingly.

Getting to Campus

In general, New York City's excellent public transportation system will be the best way to get to and from campus during Commencement Week.

  • 1 train at 116th Street subway. *Please note that the 116th Street subway station is not wheelchair accessible; the nearest accessible subway station is 96th Street.
  • M4, M60, and M104 buses at 116th Street and Broadway
  • M5 bus at 116th Street and Riverside Drive
  • M11 bus at 116th Street and Amsterdam Avenue
  • Campus shuttles for students coming from CUIMC and Manhatanville campuses will be available. Visit Columbia Transportation or download Passio Go! mobile app for more information.

By Car

Columbia is best reached by taking the 95th/96th Street exit of the Henry Hudson Parkway (West Side Highway). Use the 95th Street off-ramp and turn left onto Riverside Drive. Proceed north to 116th Street. A right turn at 116th Street leads you to the campus gate.

To reach the Henry Hudson Parkway:

From the North

Take the New York Thruway (Route 87) to the Cross Bronx Expressway in the direction of the George Washington Bridge. Bear right as you approach the bridge and take the exit for the Henry Hudson Parkway south.

The New England Thruway (I-95) becomes the Cross Bronx Expressway. Proceed as above.

Take the Saw Mill River Parkway south or the Cross County Parkway west to the Henry Hudson Parkway south.

From the West

Take the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) north or I-80 east to the George Washington Bridge. As you cross the bridge, follow signs to the exit for the Henry Hudson Parkway south.

By Train or Bus

Trains and buses arrive at New York's Grand Central Station, Pennsylvania Station, or Port Authority Bus Terminal, from which you can take public transportation or a taxi north to campus.

By Air

If you are arriving at LaGuardia, Kennedy, or Newark airport, taxi service is available to campus, and bus service is available to Grand Central Station and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The M60 city bus can be taken directly from LaGuardia Airport to Columbia.

Parking

Parking

There is no on-campus parking available during Commencement Week. Due to the number of visitors to campus and the space limitations of many garages, allow ample time to find parking. A list of nearby garages is provided below. (This list is intended for reference only and does not constitute a recommendation by the University).

There is limited parking available on the street. If you do find a spot on the street, take careful note of postings indicating parking restrictions. Many streets surrounding campus are blocked off and kept clear during Commencement Week. Cars parked in restricted areas are at risk of being towed.

If you are driving to campus with a guest requiring assistance, there are gates on Amsterdam Avenue designated for guests with disabilities, those with limited mobility, and the elderly. Learn more about Disability Services on Commencement Day.
