SONI Instructions for Student Organizations
Welcome to the SONI System! This system allows student organizations and journals to email students directly. Email to students from organizations and journals will be sent through SONI rather than through Student Services.
The SONI system works as follows: Your organization has been assigned an email account, from which you can email everyone on your email list. All students in the Law School are initially subscribed to your email list. Students may choose to unsubscribe from your list, in which case they will no longer receive your email.
All emails sent out by a student organization will also go to the SONI web log, so students can check to see what they are missing. They can also go to your individual web log, which will contain all emails sent out from your account. Messages will be expunged after 30 days.
As a condition of using this system, every email you send out is required to contain a footer which tells students how they can unsubscribe from your email list. An email sent out without this information will result in suspension of your email account. Please insert the following language in all emails:
To unsubscribe from group email lists, visit https://coursewebs-3.law.columbia.edu/discussions/SubListServ.nsf (LawNet ID required). Choose the group(s) you no longer want to receive emails from and click "UNSUBSCRIBE selected." It may take up to 24 hours for your name to be removed from the selected lists.
What should I send out?
You can send out notices of events and other information that you wish to communicate. Please note, however, that if students find the volume of email you are sending out overwhelming, they will be more likely to unsubscribe.
Will I know who is subscribed to my mailing list?
No. You can choose to collect email addresses separately from your membership, as you have in the past, but you will not know which student choose to unsubscribe from your list.
What's my email address?
Contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you do not know your email address or password. The password will be reset every year.
How will students who are unsubscribed find out about my events?
Daily and weekly LawCal emails are sent to all members of the Columbia Law School community. Additionally, all emails sent out are posted to a web log which students can check on the Student Services website at http://coursewebs.law.columbia.edu/soniblog. As a third option, students who are interested in just your information can access a web log where all of your outgoing emails sent out are posted by clicking on the site info next to your organization's name. This list can be found by going to http://coursewebs.law.columbia.edu/soni.
