Faculty of Law Professors: An Overview

The foundation of Columbia's extraordinary reputation in international and comparative law is a faculty unrivaled in the breadth and depth of its engagement with international and comparative perspectives on law.  By the most conservative standards, at least 30 professors—more than a third of the faculty—devote a substantial portion of their teaching and scholarship to international law.

Our faculty teaches throughout the world.  More than twenty members of the faculty have taught regular seminars at more than thirty different universities; they have lectured at well over fifty of the major universities in Europe, China, Japan, Israel, The Hague, Australia, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil and places in between.  They have organized or participated in hundreds of international symposia and conferences at scores of universities around the globe. 

They are engaged in the world around them; Peter Rosenblum, Director of the Human Rights Clinic and his students have traveled to Kenya and the Congo, and work on cases and research in Bangladesh, Bolivia, Zimbabwe, Chile, and Thailand.  Our "domestic" clinicians have been involved in the establishment of clinics at universities in Albania, Macedonia, Vietnam and China, and are involved in new initiatives in South America.

Our faculty collaborate with their colleagues around the world. George Fletcher, a leading scholar in the field of comparative criminal law, has brought colleagues from Germany, Spain, Argentina and France to teach in his seminar on comparative constitutional law.  Charles F. Sabel regularly collaborates with European scholars in his comparative research on the effects of labor and industry, science and technology on society.  In her work on transitional economies, Katharina Pistor has written several articles with Chenggang Xu from the LSE among numerous other scholars working in the same fields.

Overall, the faculty bring their dynamic, diverse and far-reaching international research and public service activities into the classroom, successfully bridging the gap between theory and practice for our students.
