The Human Rights Institute coordinates and provides technical support to human rights advocates and other civil society actors in their human rights treaty reporting efforts and engages in advocacy to improve U.S. accountability and foster federal support for state and local implementation of human rights treaty obligations. In addition, the Institute participates in human rights shadow reporting to inform the treaty monitoring bodies' review of U.S. compliance with the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and the Convention Against Torture (CAT).
