Lawrence Newman joined Columbia Law School in 1994. He teaches and has published in the areas of wills, trusts, and estate planning.

Newman served as law clerk to Judge Lawrence E. Walsh, U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York. He is the chairman of the board of trustees of the American Friends of the Hebrew University, and a member of the President’s Advisory Committee at Dartmouth College. Newman was the chairman of wills, trusts, and estate planning department at Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler from 1985 to 1993.

He also served as chairman of various sections of the American Bar Association, and as chairman of the committee on estate and gift taxation of the New York City Bar Association.

Newman earned a J.D. from Yale University in 1955, where he served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal. He also received a S.J.D. from New York Law School in 1963, a M.S. from Yeshiva University in 1991, and a B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1952.
