Director of Legal Writing Programs

Ilene Strauss is the director of legal writing and moot court programs at Columbia Law School. She is responsible for developing and implementing the curricula for the first-year and LL.M. legal writing programs and overseeing the Law School’s extensive moot court program.  Ms. Strauss also teaches first-year and upper-year writing courses. She created and now supervises the Law School’s Writing Center, which provides students with tailored advice on the legal writing process.

Prior to joining the Law School, Ms. Strauss practiced commercial litigation at Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler and Simpson, Thatcher & Bartlett. She also clerked for the Honorable Emilio M. Garza of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.   Ms. Strauss received her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, where she served as an editor of the Michigan Law Review, and her B.A. from Brown University.
