Simon H. Rifkind Professor Emeritus of Law

Alfred Hill was the Simon H. Rifkind Professor Emeritus of Law at Columbia Law School. He taught in diverse areas and published on conflict of laws, constitutional law, corporations, evidence, federal courts, securities regulation, and torts.

Hill was an attorney with the Securities and Exchange Commission from 1943 to 1950 and went on to serve as executive assistant to the commission chairman for two years. He taught law at Southern Methodist University from 1953 to 1956 and spent five years at Northwestern before coming to Columbia in 1962. He was a member of the American Law Institute.

Hill earned S.J.D. from Harvard in 1957, and a LL.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1986, a LL.B. from Brooklyn Law School in 1941, and a B.S from the College of the City of New York in 1937.

His passing in 2015 was deeply mourned by the Law School community.
