LawCal Tips and Tricks
As an editor of Columbia Law School's online calendar (LawCal), there are a number of things you can do to increase visibility for your events and ensure the calendar entries are posted properly.
Adding Categories to Events
LawCal offers the opportunity for users to sort events based on various categories. By adding categories, a user can sort events via the right navigation section called View by Category. You can add as many categories as appropriate to the event.
To do this, go to Publication Settings and then find the section called LawCal Categories. Use the drop-down menu to add a specific category.
Click on the button called Add another item to add multiple categories. Follow this step each time you want to add a category.
By adding tags, a user can sort events by one or multiple categories at a time to see related events.
Adding Tags to Events
By adding tags to events, users can search for specific words and find related events. Most of these tags are associated with specific centers and programs, student groups, or areas of the Law School of interest to particular groups of people.
This ranges from tags that include wellness, diversity or clerkships, to more specific tags that connect to departments or programs. These include tags for GLS, the Admitted Student Program, and Social Justice Initiatives.
Publish/Unpublish Events Posts
You have the option of making your event public or unpublishing an event. This is helpful to review your event post before making it public or make it private if an event gets canceled. An event cannot be deleted using the Delete button so unpublishing your event is the option to remove it from the calendar.
To publish/unpublish your event. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the tab Publishing options (above the Save button). Click on the checkbox next to Published to make an event public. To unpublish, uncheck the box.
Finding your Unpublished Event
If you are unable to view your event after you unpublish it, go to web.law.columbia.edu/admin/content while logged into the website. Near the top of the page where it says Show Only Items Where, use the drop-down menu next to the word status and select not published. Then use the drop-down menu right under the status menu next to the word type and select Calendar. Click the button called Filter and all unpublished calendar entries will show. The most recently updated events will appear first on the list.
Searching for Events via LawCal
On the public-facing side of calendar searches, you can view events on a daily, weekly, or monthly list or on specific days within a month. In the center bar above the list of events, you can click on one of the tabs (such as Month) and use the left and right arrows to see the list according to that day, week, or month.
To find events on specific days within a month, use the monthly calendar on the right of the events list above the View by Category section. Pick a specific date to see events for that day. Events highlighted in blue are days when events will be held. Gray events indicate that no events are currently listed for that day.
If alumni are speakers at events, please include their graduation years at the end of their names. For example, alumnus Rolando T. Acosta, who graduated from the Law School in 1982, would be written as Rolando T. Acosta ’82 in an event, along with any reference throughout the website.
Eliminate Multiple Posts for the Same Event
Prior to posting an event, check the calendar using the search function or by going to a specific date to make sure your event is not already posted. This will prevent having multiple posts appear on the calendar list for the same event.
If the event includes co-sponsors, check with each sponsor prior to adding a post and/or editing an existing one. This prevents multiple posts and keeps all sponsors on the same page regarding their messaging on LawCal.
