Preserving the Role of Forests in Mitigating Climate Change
(Climate Action Plan, p. 11.)
The Administration is to identify new approaches to protect and restore forests and other critical landscapes, including grasslands and wetlands.
Implementation, Progress, and Outcomes
February 6, 2014: The Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a multi-year partnership between the Forest Service (FS) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to improve the health and resiliency of forest ecosystems and watersheds where public and private lands meet. The project, called the Chiefs’ Joint Landscape Restoration Partnership, will invest $30 million this year in 13 projects across 12 states to help mitigate wildfire threats, protect water quality, and fortify the habitats of at-risk species. These first 13 priority projects will build on existing projects with local partnerships already in place.
