Morton L. Janklow ’53
Chairman and Literary Agent, Janklow & Nesbit Associates
In the early 1970s, Morton L. Janklow ’53 negotiated a book advance for a client at a then unheard-of book dollar figure and then successfully sued when the publisher tried to back out of the deal. That legal victory marked the beginning of a new era in the protection of writers’ interests.
Today, as chairman of Janklow & Nesbit Associates, Janklow heads one of the foremost literary agencies in the world, representing leading authors in their relationships with publishers and motion picture, television, and multimedia companies.
Janklow has maintained a strong commitment to the arts and to education throughout his career. Among the initiatives his gifts have established are the Morton L. Janklow Professorship of Literary and Artistic Property Law at Columbia Law School and the Janklow Arts Leadership Program at Syracuse University. He also serves on the advisory board for the Law School’s Kernochan Center for Law, Media and the Arts, and he is a frequent visiting lecturer on the subject of intellectual property law.

He was appointed deputy White House counsel the following year.
